Google Ads Image Sizes: What Each Campaign Type Needs

Google Ads image sizes, character limits and asset counts for Performance Max, Search, Display, Demand Gen and App, plus how Kyō turns them into a brief.

You have a campaign to launch and a folder of images from your designer. Then the questions about Google Ads image sizes start. Is the square image 1200 × 1200 or 600 × 600? How many headlines does a Performance Max asset group need? Why does Ad Strength still say “Poor” when you uploaded everything?

Getting this wrong rarely breaks a campaign outright. The cost is quieter: images cropped badly, placements your ads can’t serve in, another round of design revisions, and a launch that slips by a week. The specs are public, but they differ by campaign type, and Google revises them without notice. Keeping them straight across Performance Max, Search, Display and Demand Gen is fiddly work that has to be right every time.

Kyō, who leads the AI team at Kyōsey AI, works from Google’s official specifications for the campaign you are building. She turns them into one checklist of images, logos, video and copy, with required assets first, and she flags the rules that quietly cost you placements or Ad Strength. Your designer gets one clear brief before anything is built.

The figures below come from Google’s official specs hub as of June 2026. Confirm them against Google’s live specs before final assets ship.

Two image sizes serve across most of Google’s network. If you prepare nothing else, prepare these:

  • Horizontal (1.91:1): 1200 × 628
  • Square (1:1): 1200 × 1200

The recommended square size is not the same everywhere. For responsive display ads, Google recommends 600 × 600. Two other formats come up often:

  • Square logo (1:1). Needed for business info on Search, and used in Performance Max, Display and Demand Gen.
  • Vertical image (4:5). Optional in Demand Gen, for vertical placements.

For asset-based campaign types (Performance Max, Display, Demand Gen, App and Search image assets), images upload as .jpg or .png, up to 5 MB each.

Logo file dimensions, and video length and resolution for YouTube formats, depend on the campaign type and format you choose. Kyō works from Google’s documented specs for that format, puts the figures in your checklist, and flags what to confirm against the live specs before it ships.

Shopping and Travel work differently. Shopping draws its visuals from your Merchant Center product feed, so the feed and product image rules apply. Travel campaigns run through Google’s developer integrations, with specs in Google’s developer documentation.

How Many Assets Each Campaign Type Needs

Image sizes are half the brief. The other half is how many of each asset to supply, because those counts drive Ad Strength.

Campaign typeHeadlinesLong headlinesDescriptionsImages, logos, video
Performance Max3–15 (11+ recommended)1–52–54–20 images per ratio; 1–5 logos; up to 15 videos per orientation; business name required
Search (responsive search ads)1–15—1–4Business name and 1:1 logo for business info
Responsive display1–511–51–15 images per required ratio (5 recommended); video optional
Demand Gen1–5 (5 recommended)—1–5 (3 recommended)1.91:1 and 1:1 images and logo required; 4:5 vertical optional
App1–5 (5 recommended)—1–5 (5 recommended)Images and videos optional, but they help Ad Strength

Video campaigns on YouTube are built around the video itself, and each format has its own requirements. Kyō pulls those for the format you pick rather than forcing them into one table.

These are the maximums, in characters. “Video action” here means YouTube video ads that carry headline and description text alongside the video.

  • Headlines: 30 in Performance Max, Search, Display, Video action and App; 40 in Demand Gen.
  • Long headlines: 90 (Performance Max, Display, Video action).
  • Descriptions: 90 across all of these campaign types.
  • Business name: 25 (Performance Max, Search, Display, Demand Gen).
  • Display URL paths: 15 each in Performance Max.
  • Final URL: up to 2,048 in Search and Demand Gen.

Two rules catch people out:

  • Performance Max needs at least one headline of 15 characters or fewer.
  • Demand Gen needs at least one headline of 30 characters or fewer. Without one, the ad is rated “Incomplete” and can’t serve on Display.

In Korean, Japanese and Chinese, each character counts as two toward these limits, so a headline that looks short can still run over.

Performance Max Video And Ad Strength

Ad Strength is Google’s in-product gauge of whether you have supplied enough variety. In Performance Max, reaching Excellent Ad Strength requires your own videos in all three orientations: horizontal, square and vertical. Those three orientations are also what keeps Google from generating AI videos for the campaign. If you want control over what your video ads show, plan all three from the start.

What Kyō Does That A Bookmarked Spec Page Doesn’t

Google’s spec pages list every number for every format. They don’t tell you which ones matter for the campaign you are about to launch, or what you have missed. That is where Kyō comes in.

A Checklist Built for Your Campaign

Say you are launching Performance Max for a regional HVAC company, or Demand Gen for an online store. Kyō produces the list of what to prepare for that campaign type: required assets first, then the recommended counts that lift Ad Strength. It covers image ratios and sizes, logos, video orientations, and how many headlines, long headlines and descriptions to write, each with its character limit. If she doesn’t know the campaign type, she asks, because the answer changes the brief. Give her your plan and she’ll tell you what the spec requires and where you fall short. You can hand the result straight to a designer or copywriter.

The Rules That Cost You Placements, Caught Early

The expensive mistakes are not the obvious ones. They are the short-headline rules, the three-orientation video requirement in Performance Max, and characters that count double in East Asian languages. Kyō raises them while you are still planning, when a fix means rewriting one line instead of rebuilding an asset group.

Straight About Changing Specs

Google revises its specs without notice. When a production asset or client deliverable depends on a number, Kyō tells you to confirm it against Google’s live specs before it ships.

Then The Team Builds It

The checklist is the start, not the end, and her team can take it from there. Kyōsey AI is an AI team that does the work, not one that only recommends it. Kyō and her Google Ads and creative experts connect to your Google Ads account and carry the brief into a Search, Performance Max or Demand Gen campaign, created paused. Nothing goes live without your OK.

What You Get from It

  • One brief instead of five spec tabs. Every ratio, size, count and limit for your campaign type, in one place.
  • Fewer revision rounds. Designers know the right formats before they start, so fewer files need re-exporting after upload.
  • Fewer launch-week surprises. The rules that stop an ad serving on Display, or leave an asset group short of the variety Ad Strength looks for, are flagged while you plan.
  • Consistency across accounts. The same thorough checklist for every campaign, whoever is building it.

Behind it sit the methods of more than 100 person-years of agency experience, written down so the work is done the same careful way each time.

Who This Is for

  • Business owners running their own Google Ads who want to brief a designer once.
  • In-house marketers juggling Performance Max, Search, Display and Demand Gen who are tired of re-checking spec pages.
  • Agencies producing creative for several clients who want a consistent asset checklist for every account.

What are the main Google Ads image sizes?
Two sizes serve across most of Google's network: horizontal 1.91:1 at 1200 × 628 and square 1:1 at 1200 × 1200. Images upload as .jpg or .png up to 5 MB for asset-based campaign types. These figures are as of June 2026, so confirm them against Google's live specs before final assets ship.
What image size is best for responsive display ads?
Google recommends a 600 × 600 square image for responsive display ads, rather than the 1200 × 1200 square recommended in Performance Max. You can upload 1 to 15 images per required ratio, and 5 are recommended. Video is optional.
Why does my Demand Gen ad say Incomplete?
Demand Gen headlines can run to 40 characters, but at least one headline must be 30 characters or fewer. Without one, the ad is rated Incomplete and can't serve on Display. Adding a single short headline fixes it.
Do I need video for Performance Max?
You can run Performance Max without your own video. Reaching Excellent Ad Strength, though, requires your own videos in horizontal, square and vertical orientations. All three are also what keeps Google from generating AI videos for the campaign.
Can Kyō build the campaign, or does she only list the specs?
The spec lookup gives you a checklist for your campaign type, required assets first, and tells you where your plan falls short. Kyōsey AI is an AI team that does the work, so Kyō and her Google Ads and creative experts connect to your account and carry that brief into a Search, Performance Max or Demand Gen campaign, created paused. Nothing goes live until you approve it.
